However, this gave a failed install with the message: “This device failed to start …” etc. I then forced a new hardware install for Toshiba’s Bluetooth adapter using the Add Hardware wizard. Furthermore, XP didn’t even find the Toshiba Bluetooth Adapter. I uninstalled and reinstalled XP SP2 but still no bluetooth stack. Following your advice I found and deleted all other third party drivers (Toshiba’s and a CF card that I had once used). If I click on that (or run bthprops.cpl) I get the bluetooth devices options but not surprisingly., when I run add device, it does not find my phone. There is a bluetooth icon in the system tray. I checked properties but nothing useful there except that the driver is the Aug 2004 one from MS. This installed using MS drivers (hooray) but then showed up in Device manager with the old yellow ! mark and the dialogue “This device failed to start”. I drilled down, found, and forced an install of Toshiba’s Bluetooth network adapter. I ran Add Hardware but, again, no new devices. I then rebooted in normal mode but XP did not detect any bluetooth radios/devices. Device manager won’t allow an uninstall of this anyway as it is “required for boot up”. The only mention of bluetooth was Toshiba’s Bluetooth Personal Area Net Packet Scheduler Miniport (shown under network adapters).

If you try it, please report back as I considered it once but did not purchase. the above link should answer that question. Offers software that may work in your case. While I would try the computer mfg's site for updated drivers which will be specific to the built in bt hardware, if they are not available, the simplest solution is to get one of the higher end mini dongles that support the bt standard you need (the cheapies generally do not) While the software supplied with the dongle will work, bluetooth stacks are currently very protected and that software is tied to the specific chip embedded in the dongle and will not work with other bluetooth hardware, internal nor external.
